Punta Cana concentrates most Quebec demand for the Dominican Republic, but it is not the only way in. Puerto Plata, on the north coast, is served from Canada and shows a very different price profile.

The reading is counter-intuitive. Puerto Plata has a much lower median, so a package picked at random will probably be cheaper there. But its floor is slightly higher than Punta Cana's: the very best deals remain in Punta Cana.

- You book when you have time, without watching prices: Puerto Plata statistically gives you a better price, because its spread is tighter.
- You are patient and you watch for drops: Punta Cana offers 25,216 packages against 349, so far more chances to catch a floor.

Volume is the deciding factor here. A destination with 349 tracked packages offers few windows for a drop; one with 25,000 offers them daily. It is less a question of destination than of how many chances you get.

Why such a gap in the number of packages tracked?
Because supply itself is very unbalanced. Punta Cana is the most heavily scheduled destination by Canadian tour operators; Puerto Plata gets far fewer departures, so far fewer date and hotel combinations.
Are La Romana and Santo Domingo options?
They appear in our readings, but with very few packages: five and six respectively over the period. Too few to draw a reliable statistic from, and too few to expect regular drops.
Does a lower median mean worse hotels?
Not necessarily. It mostly reflects the composition of supply: Punta Cana has more very large upscale resorts, which pull its median upward.
