The two best-selling sun destinations in Quebec are Punta Cana and Cancún, and the question never goes away: which one costs less? Rather than guess, we looked at our own readings.
The figures below come from 275,000 price observations collected between 11 July and 4 August 2026, on departures between August and November 2026. These are advertised prices for single occupancy, taxes included, in Canadian dollars. They describe one specific window, not an eternal truth: it is precisely because these prices move that we track them.

Punta Cana costs less, at every length of stay
Departing Montreal, the median price of a Punta Cana package is below Cancún's for each of the four durations we track. The gap is not trivial on short stays.

The pattern is clear: the longer the stay, the smaller the gap. On a short stay the airfare weighs heavily in the total, and that is where the Dominican Republic keeps its edge. Over fifteen nights the accommodation takes over and the two destinations nearly converge.
The floor price tells a different story
Comparing medians means comparing what most people pay. But nobody wants to pay the median. The number that matters when you are hunting a deal is the floor: the lowest price we recorded over the period.

In other words: the same route, over the same four-week window, was advertised at $839 and at more than $4,000 depending on the moment and the hotel. That is not a measurement error, it is how the package market normally works. It is also why checking prices once, on a Tuesday evening, tells you nothing about what a destination really costs.

The gap between Montreal and Toronto is far smaller than people assume on medians, but it flips depending on how long you stay.

Toronto is marginally cheaper on short stays, Montreal takes the lead from ten nights up. Either way we are talking about 1 to 2%, which never justifies driving down the 401. The real difference is elsewhere: the 3-night floor is $839 from Montreal against $1,199 from Toronto. The median is identical, but the best deals leave from Montreal.

Are these prices per person?
They are the prices advertised by tour operators for single occupancy, taxes included. A package for two people sharing a room does not cost double: the per-person price drops, following a policy specific to each hotel.
Why compare medians rather than averages?
Because a handful of luxury suites at $15,000 drags the average up and does not represent what people actually book. The median describes the middle package, which is closer to a real traveller's reality.
Will these numbers still hold in six months?
The orders of magnitude, probably. The exact amounts, no. They describe departures between August and November 2026 recorded over four weeks. The winter high season, January to March, sits noticeably higher.
Punta Cana is cheaper — does that mean it is worse?
No. The gap comes mostly from the structure of the Dominican market, built around high-volume all-inclusive resorts, and from comparable flight distances. It is not an indicator of hotel quality.
